YDA Welcomes the Democrat Majority and 100 Hour Agenda
After 12 years of Republican rule, Democrats reclaimed the speaker’s gavel January 4th “in the spirit of partnership, not partisanship.” Under the new Democratic leadership, our representatives have decided to embark on a “100 hour agenda”, with a plan to encourage dialogue and enact changes which are long overdue.
As Young Democrats, we are glad to see issues that affect both our futures and the future of the country at large finally being addressed. Over the next week, the new Congress will introduce bills that will monitor honest leadership, open government, and fiscal responsibility; implement measures to raise the minimum wage for the first time in nearly ten years; implement the 9/11 commission’s recommendations; and increase price negotiations on drug prescriptions.
The new Congress will also focus on renewable energy and energy efficiency, stem cell research, and will propose a bill to reduce interest rates on student loans by half. It is such relevant issues that motivate the youth movement to stay involved and ardent in the political process, as they affect our immediate and distant futures. The dynamic changes in our country’s leadership and the party’s agenda of initiatives are what we as Young Democrats welcome and embrace.
We would like to congratulate the first female speaker and the newly elected Democratic Congress, and offer our support and enthusiasm for their ambitious and much needed legislative initiatives.
