YDA Encourages Young Iowans to Caucus

With the Iowa caucus just 29 days away, the Young Democrats of America (YDA) encourage all young Iowans to get informed about the caucus process and make their voice heard for the candidate of their choice.

“No matter which of our wonderful Democratic candidates they support, it is important for Young Democrats to caucus on January 3rd,” said Alexandra Acker, Executive Director of the Young Democrats of America.  “Too often, young voters are overlooked and underrepresented.  YDA encourages all young Iowans – high school seniors, college students, young workers, farmers, and parents – to participate in the caucus and help decide the future of our party and our country.”

Young voters are a traditionally disenfranchised segment of the electorate.  As a transient and hard to reach group of voters, young people may feel disassociated from a seemingly complicated caucus process.

Often before an election, confusion abounds about who is allowed to participate in our electoral process.  But actually, the rules are quite simple for the Iowa caucus.  You must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of Iowa, and a registered voter (you can register at the caucus).  It is important to note that the Iowa Secretary of State has said that a college student from another state who is attending school in Iowa is eligible to register to vote in Iowa and can caucus.  If you will be 18 years old by Election Day, November 4, 2008, you may also caucus.  To learn more about the caucus process, go to www.yda.org/youcancaucus.  Campaign volunteers from out of state are not eligible to participate in the caucus but may attend and observe.

“It is in the best interest of all of our candidates, the Democratic Party, the state of Iowa, and our democracy, for young Iowans to participate in the Iowa caucus,” said David Hardt, President of the Young Democrats of America.  “YDA will continue to work to ensure that all young Iowans have the opportunity to help decide our next president.”
