YDA Statement on the Fortieth Anniversary of the Death of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Washington, DC - On the fortieth anniversary of Martin Luther King's assassination, we at the Young Democrats of America are reminded once again of the importance of working to build tolerance and understanding among Americans of every color, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and national creed.  We are glad that Dr. King's legacy lives on in the efforts of so many, and we believe he would be proud to see that an African American and a woman are frontrunners in a race to become President of these great United States.

"We're so honored to have this opportunity," said David Hardt, President of the Young Democrats of America, "Regardless of who the Democratic Party chooses as their nominee, we're proud that the office of the Presidency is finally within the reach of minorities and women.  It's long overdue."  Mr. Hardt continued, "When I look at the membership of YDA, I realize that we, as people from all walks of life uniting for the betterment of our communities and nation, represent what Dr. King dreamed about.  The unprecedented youth turnout in support of the Democratic Party this year demonstrates the commitment of Young Democrats to making this country a place where any natural born citizen can grow up to be President.”

The Young Democrats of America salute the memory of Dr. King, and we look forward to the day when his dream is realized for every American.
