Young Democrats of America Applaud President-Elect Obama's Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Plan
Young Americans Demand Swift Action from Congress
The Young Democrats of America applaud the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan laid out by President-Elect Barack Obama yesterday and call for Congress to act swiftly to enact these much-needed priorities.
“Young Americans are often the hardest hit in tough economic times,” said David Hardt, President of the Young Democrats of America. “Young people are the least likely to have health insurance, are usually last hired and first fired, and are struggling to pay for the education needed for 21st century jobs. Urgent action is needed to improve the lives of all Americans hit by this crisis.”
Of most importance to young Americans, President-Elect Obama’s plan will:
• Invest in a green economy, doubling the production of alternative energy in three years, and create millions of green jobs;
• Invest in infrastructure and provide needed technology to schools, community colleges, and public universities;
• Make health care more efficient and more affordable; and
• Cut taxes for workers and families as well as for businesses that save or create jobs.
“This is our future on the line and these investments are crucial to the economic outlook for young Americans,” said Alexandra Acker, Executive Director of the Young Democrats of America. “While we are concerned with increasing the ballooning deficit young Americans will inherit, nothing is more important than making critical investments to get our economy moving again. Congress must act quickly to restore trust in our government and our economic systems.”
