YDA Statement on DNC and Donald Hitchcock

Practice What We Preach

YDA is  proud to learn that the Democratic National Committee has settled a wrongful  termination case of a gay employee after his partner wrote a letter criticizing the DNC for their lack of real concern for the LGBT community. The Young Democrats of America applaud the DNC's efforts to move past the old style politics and correct a wrong that occurred in the past.

"Many of my gay brothers and sisters have often felt  that the DNC only provides "lip service" to the LGBT community. The DNC has  always been willing to accept donations from the LGBT community but in the  past has overlooked the concerns of LGBT members of the Party. We now mark a new day in DNC history, and a new DNC, one that will understand and welcome all LGBT citizens," said David Hardt, President of the Young Democrats of America.

The settlement shows that the Democratic Party is willing to accept when it makes a mistake and correct its wrongs of  the past. Just as it has done in the past with its historical treatment of African  Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Native Americans, People with Disabilities,  and Women, the Democratic Party continues to evolve into a Party that accepts  and understands the concerns of all people. YDA has a renewed dedication to working with the DNC Administration
and the future DNC Chairman, Gov. Tim Kaine to provide better efforts to strengthening the Party with all constituencies.

Crystal Strait, DNC Committeewoman for the Young Democrats of America said, "This resolution proves that the DNC stands for the principle that what unites us is stronger  than what divides us." She continued. "Our Party must always be accountable to  the standard we fight for at the ballot box, State House, Congress and the  Courthouse."

YDA thanks Mr. Hitchcock's service to our Party and to the LGBT community and thanks him for his willingness to step forward and  demand change from within our great Party.
