Statement From The Young Democrats of America On The Passing of Senator Edward M. Kennedy
The United States Senate and American politics have lost a legend. Young people, families, workers, children and students have lost one of our greatest friends.
Washington DC- The Young Democrats of America mourn the loss of Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts. He championed social and economic justice, and for our entire generation, he was the conscience of our Democratic values. Working with members of both houses of Congress and both political parties, Senator Kennedy had a hand in advancing nearly every major piece of progressive legislation over the past half century. While Senator Kennedy’s body of legislative work is unparalleled, his major goal in recent years was the passage of legislation that would provide health care for all Americans.
“For the progressive movement, the loss of Senator Kennedy cannot be overstated. However, while the roar of the "Liberal Lion" has fallen silent, each of us will find the lions within us to make health insurance reform a priority," said YDA President Crystal Strait. "The time to fight is now. Young Americans must demand, that the United States Congress finds the courage to pass comprehensive, meaningful health insurance reform that Senator Kennedy fought so hard to achieve.”
Senator Kennedy’s embodiment of true public service and commitment to those Americans who are most in need will surely inspire a new generation to follow in his footsteps.
