Earlier today, YDA wrote a letter to the Cecil Roberts, President of the United Mine Workers of America, to stand in solidarity with the employees and retirees of Patriot Coal who could lose their long term health care benefits under pending bankruptcy proceedings.  For more information, please visit http://www.fairnessatpatriot.org/.

Dear Mr. Roberts:

The Young Democrats of America stand in full support of the United Mine Workers of America’s efforts to maintain the benefits promised to UMWA members and their families by Patriot Coal Company, Peabody Energy and Arch Coal Company.

More than 22,000 active UMWA members, retirees and their dependents receive health care benefits from Patriot Coal.  The circumstances that led to Patriot’s bankruptcy filing raise serious concerns, and the resulting actions could undermine the economic security of countless families and coalfield communities.

YDA cannot sit by silently while corporations find creative ways to avoid longstanding commitments to their employees who have put in so many years of hard work.  We pledge our support in joining with the UMWA and its members to take the necessary steps to ensure that the promise of lifetime health care, retirement and contractual benefits are honored.
